I Took a Few Extra Days

because, though I returned Thursday night from a truly lovely time with family, I found out Friday that I lost my job. I needed some time, friends, to process. By the way, thanks for all the sweet comments while I was away.

Anyway, let me ask you this: is this about gender? I have to hand it to Randy Cohen - he tried pretty hard to keep that out of his answer. But I would have taken it head-on: if the girlfriend had escaped, wouldn't we cheer?

EL, I'm sorry to hear about your job. Best of luck with whatever comes next for you.

This is a really interesting question you've raised. The gendered assumptions about the protector/protected roles are clearly in play, what with the starting and closing references to the relationship breaking up. That's a very clear message about the expectations of male behaviour, particularly where protecting a woman is concerned.

I'm glad that Cohen said quite clearly that its difficult to know what the right thing to do in this situation would be, but I tend to think that he didn't give enough weight to the likelihood that, in this case, the escape of one of the victims would've caused the attackers to run, and that therefore, the sex of the escapee probably shouldn't matter so much as the fact that somebody did escape, the attackers got jittery, and person who escaped was able to get help. I think Cohen's lack of clarity about why he thinks the boyfriend should've stayed is a bit suspect - an argument as simple as 'there's strength in numbers' would've been helpful, I think.

I'm sorry to hear about the job as well. I hope the search is short and the payoff quite fine.

As for the story, yeah, it's aboput gender - although I'm not quite sure what it says about gender.

really sorry to hear about the job :/

as for the article, yea. always the guy expected to play the brave hero while people always assume that a woman in that situation will/should choose flight over fight. i think there's an element of the female gendered threat of rape/abduction in there too.
